ABSTRACT

The site of Mashita Mbanza was first documented in the 1930s. It is one of just a few mound sites in Central Africa, and has thus attracted the attention of historians, ethnographers, and archaeologists. While previous investigations at the site revealed an intriguing site that was occupied between the 15th and 19th centuries CE, many questions still remained. During the 2022 BantuFirst archaeology mission, new investigations were conducted at the site to address several of these questions. This chapter present the results from the 2022 survey and excavation campaign that has resulted in a new appreciation of the site layout and settlement chronology.
