ABSTRACT

Dietary risk factors are the leading cause of chronic ill health and premature death globally. At the same time, the food system is a key driver of climate breakdown and nature loss, the consequences of which are negatively affecting human health. The good news is that a shift away from animal-sourced and ultra-processed foods to a plant-based diet can address both human and planetary health. A diet centred around fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds is nutrient dense and ideal for maintaining optimal health, preventing chronic conditions and promoting healthy ageing. We are now at the stage where we know enough about the benefits of plant-based nutrition to focus on strategies to implement food system transformation with a focus on affordability, accessibility and cultural adaptation.
