ABSTRACT

“Why am I working against Mother Nature?” is the most important question I ever asked in my forty plus years of farming. My response was to switch my focus from production to stewardship. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that my job as a farmer is to maximise production by using the modern technology of confinement, chemicals, synthetic fertiliser, antibiotics and taxpayer funded farm subsidies. Asking why am I working against Mother Nature reminded me that my purpose as a farmer isn’t to produce. My purpose is to care for the land and the living things we share it with. The story I am going to share with you explains that when I do this properly the land can provide for us all.
