ABSTRACT

Humanity has become the dominant species on the planet. This has come at the expense of the other creatures on earth. Wild animals have lost their habitat and many species have become – or are becoming – extinct. The animals farmed for food have been treated like machines, kept in isolation or in massively overcrowded conditions. Their bodies have been drugged and often mutilated. Research shows that a huge range of animals are sentient and, in many cases, have high levels of cognition and that even fishes can demonstrate play behaviour. This is a problem that only governments can solve with careful animal welfare legislation combined with appropriate trade deals.
