ABSTRACT

Our food system is no longer fit for purpose. How we produce and consume food is not the responsibility of any one actor but instead involves every one of us to rethink what we eat, where it comes from and the impact it has on people, planet and animals. This chapter explores how applying a holistic approach to food production and consumption is fundamental if we are to address the climate, health and nature crises we face today.

The authors highlight how food companies have a duty and a clear role in this space calling for them to recognise their part in the problem and solution, and ask they commit to change, implement solutions and demonstrate progress through clear measurement and transparent reporting. Solutions require extensive multistakeholder collaboration, knowledge sharing, new business models and a change in behaviour. They also require government intervention and a fairer playing field. The enormity of the task ahead should not lead to procrastination, blame or denial. There is a wealth of opportunity to be seized and shared from a new, future-fit, humane and sustainable food system.
