ABSTRACT
The study identified a series of technology-driven sustainability initiatives concerning sales and operations planning (S&OP) that the six case companies of this study (Norwegian advanced manufacturing companies from six different industries) are practising in contrast to those activities that they have not been able to implement just yet. Cultural, capability-based, collaborative, and contextual factors were identified as contributing to this gap between current practice and the sustainability opportunities afforded by emerging digital technologies. Open innovation, involving publicly funded, large-scale R&D consortiums with academic institutions, research centres, and other businesses, is proposed as a way to overcome this gap and effectively transition to sustainable S&OP, especially by leveraging on big data analytics, digital twins, additive manufacturing, blockchains, and augmented reality.
