ABSTRACT
This paper focuses on changes in the development of Lviv from the second half of the eighteenth century to modern times. The aim of the study was to: 1) develop a methodology for integrating contemporary vector data and data from old plans, and harmonising these data into the structure of the BDOT10k model and the UrbanOnto ontology; 2) prepare historical maps of Lviv's spatial development for four periods; and 3) conduct an analysis of spatial changes in Lviv in the studied periods. Our work focused strongly on the methodological side of the analysis in order to show the possibilities and limitations of using (historical) maps as data sources. We believe that the domain ontology could provide a framework that could be useful both for historical cartographers who understand maps as social products and for historical geographers who treat maps as data sources.
