ABSTRACT
The main idea for the book is to discuss the opportunities and limitations of modelling of urban space which prevails and evolves over time. Scholars of various specialisations contribute their knowledge and experience to the discussion on urban space in the past. We focused on European towns and cities in line with the organisational framework of the Historical Ontology of Urban Space project, as the book is one of the results of this research initiative. Authors of particular chapters discuss a variety of historical sources mediating the past urban space and difficulties with harmonisation, standardisation, and comparativeness of their research results. Therefore, a discussion on structural, technical, and epistemological issues raised around building a domain formal ontology became a significant part of the book. Selected case studies of Warsaw, Poznań, Gdynia, Szczecin, Magdeburg, Lviv, and other European towns, give the readers a chance to follow and understand better methodological considerations. The introduction gives more details about the whole book.
