ABSTRACT

The use of digital twin technology in cultural heritage is on the rise. This chapter discusses progress and experiences in applying digital twin technology to tangible cultural heritage sites in China. Thus, to comprehensively understand the combination of cultural heritage and digital twin technology in practice, this chapter analyses three typical digital twin applications of cultural heritage in China for the Shanghai History Museum, the Longmen Grottoes, and the Yellow Emperor’s Native Place on the three typical carriers of tangible cultural heritage: museums, heritage sites, and scenic spots. Further, using the Palace Museum as an example, this chapter investigates the pre-practice exploration of digital twin for large-scale comprehensive museums, which integrate three forms (museums, heritage sites, and scenic spots), and summarises the multifaceted and comprehensive framework for the application of digital twin technology for cultural heritage in terms of preservation, management, and service. Finally, based on the need for an integrated twinning of the comprehensive tangible cultural heritage, this chapter comprehensively discusses the future development paths of tangible cultural heritage digital twin from four perspectives: application scenarios, data models, relevant technologies, and cultural value.
