ABSTRACT
This chapter examines digital innovation and aims to map studies on this important topic to identify how digital health innovations are defined in various scientific disciplines, and how can they be taxonomized.
Through a bibliometric analysis of research results that have been published in journals indexed in the Web of Science database in 2014–2023, we identify key research areas related to digital health innovation. Mapping this research field across scientific disciplines allows us to indicate the main contributing countries and institutions and their collaboration networks, as well as the most influential papers based on their citations, and to explore the main theoretical foundations for explaining digital health innovations.
In the second research step, we conducted a systematic review of the most influential papers, providing a comprehensive definition of digital health innovations and proposing their taxonomy. In conclusion, avenues for future research are outlined.
This chapter extends the knowledge on digital innovations in the health sector by mapping the body of knowledge across disciplines in this emerging filed, showing networks of authors collaborating in this strand of research and providing a definition and taxonomy of digital health innovations.
