ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of the political and philosophical debates on the representation of future generations. It provides the main philosophical arguments in favour of the representation of future generations and discusses potential major objections. The chapter describes existing concrete proposals that have been made in the literature. It considers whether and how people should broaden the understanding of political representation. The chapter focuses on distant future generations, that is, unborn future generations, because their representation raises specific issues. It also discusses the proposals are currently under consideration: to replace the now inactive United Nations Trusteeship Council; establishing an ombudsman or an inspector in international organisations and projects; and establishing the office of a special rapporteur (or working group) on the rights of future generations. The Commission on Human Rights could provide material support for it.
