ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an analysis of the challenges associated with acquiring and using data to better understand the nature and dynamics of urbanization, poverty and inequality, and labour market outcomes in Africa. We consider some of the technical, ideological, and political reasons for the challenges of data gaps, both in terms of barriers preventing researchers acquiring data and the utility of what they can readily obtain. Ways of addressing these data gaps are proposed to help improve our means of studying African cities.
