ABSTRACT

PRISMS (PRIvacy and Security MirrorS) is a FP7 project that focuses on the so-called trade-off relationship between privacy and security. This chapter explores an element of the trade-off in greater detail. It presents a survey that used the so-called vignette methodology to concisely describe a number of situations in which both security and privacy issues play a role. The chapter analyses the results of the responses of European citizens in a number of situations. It starts with a concise presentation of the vignettes, and then outlines the research method for studying the vignettes, followed by a presentation of the overall results. Finally, two vignettes that reflect extreme responses are presented in greater detail: selling data by ISP' and 'crowd surveillance'. The vignettes helped to create a large data set that reveals the relationship between a large set of independent variables covering attitudes and demographics.
