ABSTRACT

The chapter presents the developments in the study of Syriac medicine that is undeservedly one of the least investigated and explored domains within Syriac intellectual culture. Based on the available studies as well as on ongoing projects, the intermediary role of Syriac medicine between the Classical world of Late Antiquity, Islamic medicine, and other Eastern medical traditions (for example, Persian) is surveyed in such manifestations as translations from Greek, original works, folk-medicine, hospitals, and pharmacology. The chapter concludes with an outline of main desiderata that need to be addressed in order to assess the actual impact of the Syriac tradition in detail.
