ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of integration policies and adult second language learning in Finland. It attempts to get behind official policy interpretations by drawing on insights from two very different projects. First project was a politically high-profile educational project, Participative Integration into Finland. The second project was drawing on here is an ongoing research project, Transforming Professional Integration. The author's role in this project was that of external experts or policy advisors, since research centre was commissioned to write the project's development plan. The creation, interpretation and appropriation of integration policies, including adult second language teaching and learning, are complex processes that involve different participants on different scales. Finally, it concludes with a look at the future directions in integration policies and adult second language learning. Moreover, there seems to be no end to polarized discussion concerning the future of inward migration and integration policies.
