ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to the history of the Peace Corps mission, goals and then describe the dynamics of team teaching in the Peace Corps context, evaluating the strengths and challenges of their current approach. About 40 per cent of the Peace Corps volunteers are working in education projects around the world. Many of these projects focuses on teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) and many require team teaching. Generally, TEFL volunteers help local teachers and students become more proficient in English that help local teachers gain confidence in a learner centered, communicative teaching environment open professional leadership opportunities for their co-teachers and help develop the English-language teaching capacity in each of the countries in a sustainable manner. The significant changes made in the Peace Corps approaches development has clearly seen in the agency's new strategy of limiting the number of projects in each country and in the re-design of three months preservice training for volunteers.
