ABSTRACT

The opportunities and constraints for youth entrepreneurship not only differ from country to country, and between rural and urban areas, but also between different economic sectors. The sectors of an economy differ in relation to their structure, the type of business activities involved, the nature of the demand and supply, the resources and skills needed to start up, the policy environment surrounding the sector, and their significance and potential for growth and employment creation. Growth in the mobile telephony sector in sub-Saharan Africa has been remarkable in recent years, resulting in some commentators describing the mobile phone phenomenon as creating a "revolution". Apart from generating new possibilities for entrepreneurs through innovations, such as mobile banking and mobile phone applications, a large informal economy around mobile telephony has also emerged which is providing new opportunities for many young people to engage in entrepreneurship.
