ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on how the respective sectors are viewed by the young entrepreneurs and the population as a whole, why they enter the sector, and how long young entrepreneurs tend to remain within a sector. Handicraft production differs in some respects to the other sectors studied as many young women remain doing the same activity within the sector, though it is common for the more resourceful young women to both add additional crafts to their repertoire and, where possible, invest in machinery. Income-generating activities within sub-Saharan Africa tend to be gendered but as over have shown the informalisation of the labour market has resulted in the blurring of some of the gender boundaries. Young people who are employed within the tourism sector also tend to see their work as temporary and a means of generating capital to set up a business.
