ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the social backgrounds of metal music listeners, their academic qualifications, their social status, and their genders. It qualifies the cultural characteristics of metal music listeners, particularly in terms of omnivorousness. The chapter aims to measure their level of commitment to this musical culture and how involved they become, based on parameters such as their look, the age when they first became interested in metal, or whether they play an instrument. The Hellfest audience seemed to be more employable than an average member of the national workforce. The Hellfest audience appears to be more employable than the average working-age population.
