ABSTRACT
This chapter analyzes the history of the relationship between the city of Volta Redonda and the Brazilian National Steel Company (CSN) and presents a comparison between Volta Redonda and the city of Brasilia. Both cities have been sites for experimentation and implementation of state policies, projects of national development and the manifestation of national ideologies based in notions of work, family and society. The chapter considers the consistencies and inconsistencies observed across three generations of CSN workers regarding significant events and changes in the dominant patterns of recruitment, training and administration within CSN. The first generation is composed of people whose parents came to Volta Redonda to work. The second generation is marked by the important status CSN placed on technical abilities, and in doing so, Escola Técnica Pandiá Calógeras assumed a vital role in the formation of the workforce. The third generation chooses technical careers from the rich variety of academic and professional courses offered today in Volta Redonda.
