ABSTRACT

The development of computers with fast processor speeds and large memory capacities coupled with the emergence of the Internet changed the landscape of testing forever. This chapter explores the issues the test developer should consider when determining which format to adopt. It considers three formats that are most commonly used in testing: text; video, in which the characters are actors; and animation, in which the characters are avatars. The chapter focuses on situational judgment tests (SJTs) that are effective as a text-, video- or animation-based assessment, and serve as a great example for comparing the relative merits of different media formats. The advantage with video is that the diversity representation is directly represented without an animator interpretation of what physical characteristics reflect a particular demographic. Animation provides an advantage in communicating a wider range of diversity with a limited number of voice talents. For text formats, quality assurance is mainly focused on careful proofreading for spelling and grammatical issues.
