ABSTRACT

The main objective of this chapter is to offer a survey of second/foreign language (L2) learning across the lifespan and, in particular, to address the role of age and technology in the learning process. The research area addressed in the present chapter is extramural, informal L2 learning intertwined with technology, with special attention given to the role of digital games in L2 learning. Central concepts in the field will be covered, and upon having read this chapter, readers should feel acquainted with leading views on the topic, and also be informed about how, when, and where L2 development and learning may occur today. It is hoped that readers will also realize why it is often relevant to discuss age and technology in combination. As research has shown, individuals’ respective language learning experiences may be(come) very different depending on preferences in technology use. Finally, while it is easy to take access to technology for granted—and technological access is the “default scenario” in this chapter—it needs to be acknowledged that this, of course, not always is the case for all L2 learners across the world.
