ABSTRACT

The introduction raises the key questions of the book and gives an overview of the literature on urban infrastructure and post-socialist transformations. The introduction offers initial thoughts on combinations of those two sets. On the one hand, the chapter shows how attention to post-socialist cities adds to the virtual lack of information on post-socialism in infrastructure literature, which is dominated by studies on the global North and South. In addition, an infrastructural perspective on post-socialist transformations allows for insights into normative hybridity, an interplay of legacies of egalitarian infrastructural landscapes with increasing inequalities, and experiences and adaptations to abrupt infrastructural demise.
