ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses the current state, change and future prospects of green infrastructure (GI) using the examples of an Eastern German, a Polish and a Russian city. Political and economic transition after 1989 brought fundamental change to cities, their urban societies and also to urban nature. Faced by recent reurbanization, many post-socialist cities experience a sort of balancing act between regrowth, new construction and infill development on the one hand, and the preservation and enhancement of green spaces and GI on the other. This chapter presents three case studies of the post-socialist world: Leipzig, Łódź and Arkhangelsk.
