ABSTRACT

Frans Hals portrayed a considerable number of fellow artists in the second half of his career. The portraits of Adriaen van Ostade, Frans Post, and Vincent van der Vinne are still there to be admired, but others are only known through early reproductions or references in inventories. This paper focuses on what these artists' portraits might tell us about Hals's artistic production in his later years. With the help of both conventional and alternative criteria, several new identifications are proposed.
