ABSTRACT

The science and research landscape is made up of unique combinations of continuity and innovation, of tradition and revolutions, of changing paradigms and persistent disciplinary approaches. 2 The landscape combines research with teaching, science with society, universities with governments, industries and societal partners, and pioneering groups and individuals with professional organisations. On the map, we find universities, laboratories, research centres, schools, colleges and, every now and then, an institute for advanced study (ias).
