ABSTRACT
The son of a firefighter and a social worker, Denny Borsboom was not born into an academic environment. ‘I grew up on the wrong side of Wassenaar,’ he jokes. (Wassenaar is a town known in the Netherlands for its elite milieu.) However, after attending an ‘upper-class high school’ on the other end of town, he found his way to the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. ‘I think I can survive here; these are nice people,’ he thought at the time. Years later, at the same university, he became a professor of psychology and psychological methods. Looking back, he still stands by his first impression: ‘Psychologists really are nice people!’
