ABSTRACT
‘The Institute for Advanced Study (ias) is a “motor block of creativity” within the UvA – a place where fundamental questions are asked. Because at the ias, science begins with social questions. This is a completely different way of connecting science and society compared to the classic ivory tower model of science, where results are produced out of curiosity first and valorised afterwards. Complex social questions can in fact provoke such curiosity and raise such exciting scientific questions that they actually demand fundamental research.’
