ABSTRACT
This essay examines Johann Baptist Metz's conviction that authentic hope arises through the memory of those who suffer. For Metz, hope is awakened by remembrance and by a desire for Jesus that disrupts complacency and echoes through culture, calling communities toward compassion and responsibility for one another.
