ABSTRACT
This essay explores John Caputo's sense of hope as a happening; an open-ended event that signals how the world might be otherwise. Such hope lives in uncertainty and is realized only when we respond to what calls upon us, human or nonhuman. For Caputo, hope requires radical openness to unexpected possibilities rather than submission to a coercive power.
