ABSTRACT

Introduced by Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony Corporation in 1965, the portapak consists of a portable ½-inch reel-to-reel video recorder (DVK-2400) and an electronic tube camera (DVC-2400). This first mass-produced video ensemble was marketed as an easy-to-use portable system. The black and white camera measuring 2.8 inches (7.14 cm) in width, 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height, and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in depth and the recorder, measuring 4.9 inches (12.38 cm) in width, 11 inches (27.94 cm) in height, and 11.3 inches (28.73 cm) in depth together weigh around 15.4 lbs (7 kg), excluding a battery pack. The tape allowed for 20 minutes of footage. A manual crank attached to the recorder could be used to rewind the tape. The camera is equipped with an integrated electronic viewfinder and a mountable microphone.
