ABSTRACT
The world’s first call from a cell phone—a Dyna Tac—was made in 1973 by Martin Cooper, head of communications systems at Motorola. With dimensions of just under 10 inches (25 cm) long (without the aerial) and weighing 1.5 lbs (790 g), the Dyna Tac was considered small and compact at the time. Since then, cell phone technology has advanced rapidly. Devices have not only become smaller in size and lighter in weight, they have also become a multi-purpose part of everyday life. The device featured in this chapter weighs less than 7 oz (200 g) and measures less than 5 x 2.5 inches (13 x 7 cm).
