ABSTRACT
The Depok private estate – known as particuliere landerij – is situated between Jakarta and Bogor. These two cities, approximately 50 km apart, accommodated the two official residences and offices of the colonial governor general, and today still accommodate those of the president of the Republic of Indonesia. During the Dutch colonial period, Depok was a sub-district (onderdistrict) – part of the Parung District – with 32 villages and eight estates (landerijen). The centre of government during the colonial period is thought to have been located around Old Depok Station.1 Since 1999, Depok has been a city-level administrative government unit in the province of West Java.
