ABSTRACT

This chapter draws the book to a close, encouraging housing policy experts to engage and build alliances across disciplines and domains in shaping new residential living environments for the future. We propose that ideological allegiances can limit innovative solutions – thus, we suggest that the time for revisiting social housing or cohousing may be relevant, even if considered radical in some circles. Likewise, we propose that an ideological opposition to the existence of single-family homes may not be helpful, at least in the short term. Persuasion, creativity, and incentives are required to engage suburban communities to embrace density. Identifying design alternatives and policies to maintain housing affordability is an essential step in solving the housing crisis.
