ABSTRACT

Over the past few decades there has been huge surge in number of people losing their lives in road accidents. Amongst various reasons for these fatalities poor atmospheric conditions due to fog, smog, sand storms etc. are also a notable culprit. Although major advances have been achieved in driver assistance systems to improve road safety, issues regarding smart assistance in poor weather conditions still prevail. Through this paper, we propose a smart on board system to detect the presence of obstacles on the road especially when visibility is extremely poor. The proposed electronic system can gradually reduce the speed of the vehicle to halt it safely thus preventing possible accidents. The proposed model has been experimentally tested in different atmospheric conditions to test its reliability. The observations revealed that the proposed model alerts the driver well in advance about obstructions on the path and automatically slows the vehicle if driver fails to do the same.
