ABSTRACT
Environmental laws require protection, safety, or the absence of effects, which requires taking precautions in the face of uncertainty. The precautionary principle has been written into some laws, but the definitions are vague and the interpretation is often difficult. Some definitions require prohibiting an action when effects are uncertain. In practice, environmental laws are usually implemented in a precautionary manner in the sense of taking actions to reasonably ensure protection.
