ABSTRACT
We scientists, and especially ecologists, are fascinated by the hierarchical organization of the natural world. We convey this by defining issues in terms of levels of organization, which can be both revealing and misleading. The levels of biological organization considered by ecological assessors are suborganism, organism, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere.
