ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the foundation for the discussion and analysis of radiation heat transfer. Spectrum thermal radiation intensity along with emissive power for blackbodies and real surfaces is presented. Surface radiation properties are also defined; these properties include emissivity, absorptivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity. The chapter presents how to determine the total emissivity and absorptivity using the fraction method. Combined radiation and convection is also considered. Fundamental thermal radiation and surface properties that are useful for many engineering applications such as surface radiators, space vehicles, and solar collectors are provided in this chapter.
