ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with 1-D steady-state heat conduction through the plane wall with and without heat generation, a cylindrical tube with and without heat generation, and fins with constant and variable cross-sectional areas. One-dimensional heat transfer has many real-world applications including heat loss through building walls, heat transfer through tubes, and heat loss through fins. The process to solve for the temperature distributions within plane walls, circular tubes, and fins is presented. In all configurations the presence of heat generation is considered, and variable cross-section fins are discussed. The Bessel function is introduced in this chapter, as it is required to solve variable cross-section fin problems with various thermal boundary conditions.
