ABSTRACT

This section provides a framework in which to characterise people-nature relationships. It advances three types of relation and introduces the associated theory and histories behind each. These relations are: (i) the relations of domination, emphasising human mastery of nature; (ii) the relations of determination, emphasising nature as a controlling force in human life; and (iii) relations of care, emphasising human affiliation with non-human others.
