ABSTRACT

In this section we explore different models and approaches to the management of nature, with a focus on urban and catchment ecosystems and the notion of a ‘biophilic’ city. Splitting into groups, our students visit three different professors that help them consider the processes by which decisions are increasingly made through: (i) ecosystem assessment, (ii) economic valuation (cost-benefit analysis); and (iii) public participation. They reconvene at the end of the chapter to exchange and discuss what they’ve learned.
