ABSTRACT

Current regulation limits exposure to pesticides in food and water as well as exposure to farm workers and others working in and around release points. Organochlorine, organophosphates, and other classes of insecticides, and herbicides like paraquat can be contacted by inhalation, dermal contact, and other means. In addition to pesticides other contaminants are regulated in air, by EPA and other regulatory bodies. Examples are given for pesticides, solvents, and toxic waste. Exposures in air are poorly understood and yet the air is a critical factor in exposure, transport, and fate. Notable examples of disastrous effects from airborne chemicals include the accidental release of methyl isocyanate (MIC) at Bhopal, India, and acrylamide in Scandinavia.
