ABSTRACT

An example is described for freons and their replacement chemicals. CFC replacement chemicals can break down in the air to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The formation and downwind fate of TFA is described here based on the work by coauthor Tom Cahill. TFA is highly water soluble and very stable and thus can accumulate in terminal surface waterbodies such as Mono Lake, Pyramid Lake, Salton Sea, and vernal pools.
