ABSTRACT
Embroidery machines are a prime example of successful technological progress. Chapter 11 takes an in-depth look at the development of embroidery technology and embroidery machines, tracing their evolution from a traditional craft to a highly computerised process that is an integral part of various industries using this textile technology. It examines the historical and cultural significance of embroidery, as well as its economic impact. The chapter also looks at the technological advances that have transformed embroidery, including the development of multi-head machines and modern digital systems. A detailed insight into the classification, operation and development of embroidery machines is provided. Additionally, the innovations that have transformed embroidery from an artisanal practice to an industrialised technology are highlighted, underlining its importance for both decorative and functional textile applications. The centres of early machine development were the St Gallen region of Switzerland and the Vogtland region of Germany, where the embroidery industry remains an important part of the cultural identity.
