ABSTRACT

This case study will explore the notion of high performance through the concept of the living workplace. The ever-evolving workplace that adjusts with its occupants, and the contributing factors that are considered, addressed, and aligned during briefing and design, and throughout its life cycle.

In sport, a high-performance athlete requires passion, commitment, rigour, hard work, and openness to failure to succeed. So it is with workplace as well. A high-performance workplace has higher-order purpose, a well-articulated ‘why’, as well as a series of achievable enablers, the ‘hows’, to reach its full potential.

Tracing a 10-year (and still going) story with Arup globally and in Melbourne specifically, this case study will dive into the why and the how of this high-performance workplace. We’ll understand the bigger context within which the business operates globally, and the role workplace plays to enable people to each contribute to organisational success. We will take a detailed look at the combination of elements that have come together to create Arup’s Melbourne workplace, with an emphasis on organisational and human factors.
