ABSTRACT
This chapter describes a pre-touch reaction distance analysis around the touchable upper body parts, i.e., shoulders, elbows, and hands, based on human–human pre-touch interaction, and examines the effects of gender, approach side, speed, and acclimation for modeling a pre-touch reaction distance. We experimentally collected data from 36 participants and defined a reaction distance for the shoulders, elbows, and hands. We found that the distance around the hands is smaller than that around the shoulders and elbows. We implemented our results in a masculine appearance android and confirmed that it reacted toward pre-touch situations based on the obtained model.
