ABSTRACT

Reliability is very important for the electrical grid and those who depend on electricity for important purposes such as heating and lighting. The transition to renewable electricity and the smart grid includes reliability as an important concern. The February 2021 severe winter storm impacted 4.5 million people in Texas, causing over 200 deaths and about $100 billion of losses in Texas. Reliability was poor. The reliability of the grid is very important; however, it is also very important for individual customers to be prepared for grid failures and loss of electricity. There is also the need for reliability of the company that generates the electricity because there were problems with frozen coal piles and other frozen systems that would not operate. Reliability needs to be included in the sustainable energy pathway as an important goal.
