Most reactions that are essential in biology are inherently slow. Think of peptide hydrolysis, which organisms use to break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. In neutral buffer, this reaction has a half-life of hundreds of years. Imagine how you would feel if you had to wait 500 years to digest half of the protein you consumed at lunch!
