ABSTRACT
Life on Earth relies on numerous elements, but only six (C, H, N, O, P, S) comprise the bulk of living matter ( Chapters 1 and 2 ). Among these elements, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur each occur in different oxidation states, enabling the redox processes that power fundamental life processes.
