ABSTRACT
This chapter is designed to accomplish three goals. The first is to summarize the state of available surface temperature measurements and opportunities for future instrumentation. We then address the relevance of sea surface temperature (SST) for both physical and biological oceanographers, and finally, we discuss the use cases for which satellite measurements of SST might or might not be appropriate and why.
